To give you the inside track, we asked James what makes Jet Pack different:

When you meet a founder building a consumer, what’s the gut feeling or pattern you’ve learned to trust, even if it’s not in the deck?

Having built a consumer unicorn myself, I believe I am uniquely placed to identify the founders who have what it takes to do the same. I also believe I am uniquely placed to identify the key, often intangible elements of brand magic needed to catapult a business and a brand to the next level.

Aside from capital, what unique value do you think this fund brings to early consumer brands?

We are all about adding as much value as we can. Working with so many founders I have learnt first-hand what they need and how I can best support them. We will provide strategy advice, financial advice, brand and marketing advise. We can also connect businesses with amazing retailers in the UK, Europe and all over the world.

You’ve operated at the sharp end of consumer - what gap in the funding landscape are you trying to close with this fund?

For me there is not enough smart money for early-stage consumer founders. I never want to just invest cash. Anyone can do that. I want to spot raw, unbridled potential and then look to harness and galvanise that potential and then do all I can to help turbocharge the company. I don’t see myself as an investor, I almost see myself as a part time cofounder and that is why I make so few investments each year – because that is what really gives me the ability to go all in.

Five years from now, what’s the one sentence you hope a founder says about working with you?

Jet Pack really helped me build something bigger, something better than I set out to build.
